Whilst the Ludovisi Throne, left, can be easily related to Greek art and placed in the tradition of Western Greek Sculpture, the Boston Throne, below, remains an enigma. The various theories illustrated in this project have never been completely discounted, and, along with the confusion surrounding the throne's discovery, the function, origin and meaning still remain unsolveable. |
This project has aimed to present the various theories in an unbiased yet judicious way. Overt personal opinion has (hopefully) been avoided in order to illustrate fully the critical debate surrounding the authenticity of the Boston Throne, whilst taking a sensible stance in evaluating the proposed theories. Some suggestions have obviously seemed more likely than others, but it is left up to the reader to judge the authenticity of the Boston Throne relief. ( See Melissa Terras' personal opinion on the authenticity of the Boston Throne.) | |
The critical debate surrounding the Thrones stands as a testament to the problems encountered in trying to assign a specific function and origin to a work of unknown manufacture. |
