The Dimensions of the Thrones



The Thrones are of very similar dimensions.
Although there is some variation between
measurements, when placed together (see
diagram below) it can be seen that they
are of very similar design (one which is
uncommon in Greek Art.) This probably
indicates that the Boston Throne was
designed to go with the Ludovisi Throne,
if not made at the same time.


The Boston Throne (denoted by the black dotted line) can be seen to correspond with the shape of the Ludovisi Throne (denotated by the black line. The slope at the top of the front panel has been shown to indicate what the Throne may have looked like before being damaged.)

Note the way the figures on the Boston Throne lean out onto the volutes, whilst the Ludovisi Throne is self contained. Nevertheless, the two show an overwhelming similarity of design.

The dimensions of the Thrones can be compared in the table below. The slight variations suggest that the thrones were not completed by the same hand, but the overall scheme suggests the maker of the Boston Throne had reference to the Ludovisi Throne.
