eclectic hybrids of technology, media, music and performance.

This year's LEAPS New Music Morning event coincides with
a major retrospective on the experimental Black Mountain
College `Starting From Zero'. The college brought together
the likes of John Cage, Robert Rauschenberg, Buckminster Fuller
and Merce Cunningham who collaborated on interdiscplinary
performances as well as innovating in their own fields.
Cage's 4'33" was one of the products of this environment.
The college's brief existence links the arts and crafts
ideas of the Bauhaus with the happenings of Fluxus and beyond.
`Free Association' includes new work and collaborations from
LEAPS and Cambridge-based artists and works inspired
by the Black Mountain College exhibition, taking in video, sound art,
improvisation, instrumental, electronic and computer music
using Csound and MAX/MSP. Artists featured include Jo Roberts,
Cos Chapman, Kate Newell, Guy Avern, Chris Rogers, Robb Appleton,
Alex Sullivan, Sharon Sullivan, Jeremy Henty and J. K. Brook.

LEAPS founder members Miss Roberts and Cos present
absurd rock cabaret.
The Rude Mechanicals started out playing
as a scratch band at LEAPS events in Cambridge. It is through
LEAPS that the other members came across Miss Roberts performing
her surreal and absurd poetry/performance art.
They describe their music as Absurd Rock and their
performances are often very theatrical having included
such things as lessons in toe sucking, the mythology of
Derek: the man who lives in the loft, and instructions
on DIY flying.
